Everton Forward Martin Sherif Charged With FA Betting Violations

Everton FC has formally charged 20-year-old forward Martin Sherif with breaching Football Association betting regulations. The club confirmed that Sherif is alleged to have placed 61 wagers on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.

Player Background and Loan Spells

Sherif joined the Merseyside club’s academy in 2019 after departing Almere City. Originally from Liberia, he earned promotion to the first team during the 2024/25 season but has not yet made a competitive appearance. His previous campaign was spent on dual loans to League One sides Rotherham United and Port Vale, where he recorded 24 appearances and scored four goals across both stints before both clubs dropped to League Two. Sherif must submit his response to the charges by Monday.

Regulatory and Commercial Context

The allegations coincide with ongoing regulatory scrutiny of Everton’s commercial partnership with Stake. The operator lost its Gambling Commission licence in early 2025 and relocated its branding from the front of the shirt to the sleeves to align with Premier League sponsorship rules. A current consultation is examining a proposal to prohibit all unlicensed gambling advertising in British sport.

This case marks the most significant betting violation in English football since midfielder Sandro Tonali faced sanctions in 2024. Tonali received a 10-month suspension from Italy’s FIGC alongside a two-month FA ban following connections to an illegal gambling network. Earlier precedents include defender Harry Toffolo’s five-month ban in 2023 and striker Ivan Toney’s eight-month suspension that same year.
